Smart Socket

The part of the system that actually switches mains power. Solenoid valves, humidifiers, dehumidifiers, pumps — anything that needs turning on and off based on what the room is doing.

It obeys exactly one paired controller and ignores everything else on the air. It never joins your WiFi in normal operation, and it holds two safety limits of its own that no command can override.

It Answers to One Device Only

A mains socket that can be told what to do by anything on the network is a socket that will eventually be told what to do by the wrong thing. So this one is paired to a single controller by hardware address, and it discards every packet that doesn't come from it.

That includes a second OMGrow socket sitting on the same bench, a neighbour's identical hardware through the wall, and anything else transmitting on the same band. There's no pairing mode to leave open by accident and no discovery process for something else to answer.

The link is a direct device-to-device radio protocol, chosen for stability above all else. There's no router in the path, no message broker, and no server. Your commands from the app reach the socket by going to its controller first, which then talks to the socket over that private link.

What It Won't Do

  • Join your WiFi

    Not in normal operation. WiFi exists only in a firmware update mode you activate with a physical button press.

  • Depend on the internet

    Nothing about its switching behaviour touches a cloud service. Your connection can be down for a week and it carries on.

  • Take orders from anything else

    Wrong hardware address, ignored. There is no override for this.

  • Stay on when it's lost contact

    Silence is treated as a fault, not as permission to continue

Limits It Enforces Itself

Its controller sends a heartbeat carrying the relay state it intends. Twenty seconds without one and the socket opens the relay on its own initiative.

Maximum on-time

No single switch-on lasts longer than fifteen seconds, no matter what the controller requests. Continued operation requires continued instruction.

Safety That Doesn't Trust the Controller

Most safety logic lives in the brain of the system, which is a problem, because the brain is the thing most likely to crash. If the controller is also the only thing that can stop the valve, then a hung controller means a valve stuck open.

So the last two limits live down here instead. The socket counts its own seconds and enforces its own ceiling. It doesn't need the controller to be working, doesn't need it to be honest, and doesn't need it to be powered on. Silence is a stop signal, not an absence of one.

The heartbeat carries the state the controller believes the relay should be in, which means a socket that has somehow ended up out of step corrects itself on the very next message rather than waiting for someone to notice.

What It Switches

The socket does the switching. The decision about when comes from whichever OMGrow controller it's paired to, which is what determines the behaviour you get.

CO₂ Solenoids

Paired to the CO₂ Controller, it receives short injection pulses worked out by the controller's control loop, holding the room near your target without overshooting it.

Humidity Equipment

Humidifiers and dehumidifiers, switched on the readings your sensors are actually reporting rather than a timer that knows nothing about the room.

Pumps and Irrigation

Feed pumps and irrigation lines run to a schedule, with the same fail-safe behaviour applying — if the controller goes quiet, the pump stops.
